The school-time YES sessions is a new program that we have been very excited about; the training and certifications that are covered in this program are: CPR/First aid, Food handler’s permit, customer service, safety training, and computer training (typing, MS Word, Excel, Publisher). YES teens that are involved in the school-time sessions (fall and winter/spring) can be eligible for a $200 stipend and 60 hours of service learning hours for high school graduation.
The teens you are about to read about below have been selected from various community centers and teen life centers around Seattle, to participate in the program. You might see these teens, Melissa or myself, volunteering at some of following community centers: Delridge, Jefferson, Van Asselt, Hiawatha, Miller, or at Garfield, Meadowbrook, and Southwest Teen Life Centers. If you see any of us, feel free to say “hi”! I hope you enjoy getting to know us, and our program.
Please contact us if you have any questions about this program, or the upcoming summer programs our unit offers: 206.684.4575 or [email protected]

One fun activity that we did was called “body maps”. Using butcher paper, YES teens had their partner trace their body on the paper. This activity allows everyone to freely express themselves through drawing and writing. It also helps fellow YES participants and staff learn more about everyone, get to know them as people, and learn about their background. What makes them happy? What do they not tolerate?
To guide them, we gave them the following questions for them to answer on their body map: |
BRAIN:
How do you remember information? |
EYES:
When people first meet or see me, what do I want them to learn about me? Legs: What issues are important to me? What do I want to stand up and work for? |
Ears:
How do you prefer to have people tell me things or give me constructive criticism? Feet: What tasks do I dislike doing and prefer to walk away from? |
Hands:
In what ways do I enjoy helping others? Skin: What keeps me going when I’m feeling down? |
Heart:
If something has upset me, how do I respond & how do I want others to treat me? |
